Having learned about the role of the assistant judge a few years ago, she was excited to run for the position and eager to begin this role. Courthouse History

Addison County’s first courthouse was constructed in the 1790’s. In 1814 the building was moved, and in 1829 and 1844 extensively renovated. Finally, in the 1880’s it was retired and moved to the Addison County Fairgrounds (now the Recreation Park) where it served as a harness shop, among other things, until it was demolished in 1939.

In 1883 a new courthouse was constructed. This handsome building, which stands still today (5 Court Street), designed by Middlebury architect Clinton Smith, served Addison County for over one hundred years. When a larger courthouse became a necessity, the 1883 courthouse passed to Middlebury College, in accordance with the deed on the property.

In 1995-96 a new courthouse was constructed on a site east of the 1883 courthouse. Named after Judge Frank Mahady, the new building, one of two state-owned courthouses in Vermont, features a hipped roof, a center cupola, and a pedimented entry bay. The modern Queen Anne building was designed by Burlington architect J. Graham Goldsmith.

Thank you to John E. Deacon (www.courthouses.co) for the photo of the current courthouse and some of the history of Middlebury’s courthouses, and Glenn Andres and his Walking History of Middlebury for much of the early history.
