ASSISTANT JUDGES

Hon. Mary C. Frost

Judge Frost was appointed by Governor Phil Scott in July  of 2021 to fill the vacant seat created by retiring Assistant Judge Wesley Mook. Judge Frost was elected for a full term in November of 2022 to start for four years beginning February 1, 2023.  Judge Frost was the Bennington Unit Clerk from 2010 to her retirement in 2015 and before that as the Court Manager for the Criminal and Family Divisions from 2003 to 2010.  Judge Frost worked as a paralegal in law firms from 1972-2003. Judge Frost resides in Shaftsbury and has three adult children and seven grandchildren.

Hon. Brian W. Peat

Judge Peat was elected as an Assistant Judge in November of 2022 to serve a four year term commencing on February 1, 2023.

Judge Peat was born and raised  in Bennington his entire life. After graduating from Mt Anthony Union High School, Judge Peat joined his father in the family glass business, where he is currently the third generation owner. For most of his adult life, Judge Peat has been a volunteer with The Bennington Rescue Squad., where he served as a  past Captain, past President and retired EMT.  He has also served nine years on its Board of Directors and as Chairman.  Judge Peat and his wife live in Bennington.

Courthouse History

The Southshire Courthouse was built in 1936 as a replica of the original Southshire Courthouse in Old Bennington that burned in 1869.
